Emergency

Dental emergencies rarely wait for office hours

For that reason Southwest Pediatric Dentistry maintains a 24-hour emergency service program for our patients and parents. We are available anytime in the event of an accident, dental pain or infection. You are encouraged to contact us after office hours at 402.730.8524.

Answered by our own team — not an answering service.

Start here: how urgent is it?

Three tracks, so you know exactly who to call in the next sixty seconds.

  1. Call 911 first

Head injury, heavy bleeding, trouble breathing

If your child was knocked unconscious, cannot breathe comfortably, or is bleeding heavily, emergency medical care comes before dental care.

    Call 911
  2. Call us now

Knocked-out tooth, facial swelling, severe pain

These need attention within the hour. Our 24-hour line reaches a real person on our team, day or night.

  3. Call next business day

Small chip, lost filling, loose baby tooth, mild ache

Uncomfortable but not urgent. Leave a message or call the office and we will get your child on the schedule quickly.

While you dial

What to do in the first few minutes

Knocked-out permanent tooth

Act within 30 minutes
  1. 1Pick the tooth up by the crown, never the root.
  2. 2Rinse gently with water — do not scrub or use soap.
  3. 3If your child is calm, slip it back into the socket. Otherwise store it in milk.
  4. 4Call the emergency line on your way to us.

Toothache

Same day if it wakes them up
  1. 1Rinse with warm salt water to clear any trapped food.
  2. 2Use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek.
  3. 3Give the usual dose of children's pain reliever if age appropriate.
  4. 4Never place aspirin or heat directly on the gums.

Chipped or broken tooth

Call today
  1. 1Rinse the mouth with warm water.
  2. 2Apply a cold compress to limit swelling.
  3. 3Save any pieces you can find in a cup of milk or water.
  4. 4Call us so we can see how deep the break goes.

Swelling or infection

Do not wait
  1. 1Look for facial swelling, fever, or a bump on the gum.
  2. 2Keep your child upright and hydrated.
  3. 3Do not apply heat — it can spread infection.
  4. 4Call the emergency line immediately.

Quick do and don't

Do

  • Stay calm — your child takes their cue from you.
  • Save any broken pieces in milk or water.
  • Use cold compresses, not heat.
  • Note the time the injury happened.

Don't

  • Do not scrub or disinfect a knocked-out tooth.
  • Do not put aspirin directly on the gums.
  • Do not try to re-implant a baby tooth.
  • Do not wait to see if swelling goes down on its own.
